Young Mathematical Talents from 10 Countries Gather Near İzmir for the IX International Tournament “In the Footsteps of Thales”
The competition stage of the IX International Tournament “Mathematics Without Limits – In the Footsteps of Thales” has concluded in the İzmir region of Türkiye.
Young mathematicians from the Philippines, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, India, Yakutia, Türkiye, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Colombia took part in this prestigious international competition.
Tomorrow, October 11, at 10:00 a.m., the official awards ceremony will take place on the shores of the Aegean Sea, in front of the Grand Efe Hotel in Özdere. The ceremony will honor the winners who participated in the final round in Türkiye.
Trophies, gold, silver, and bronze medals, and wreaths made of olive branches will celebrate the achievements of these talented young mathematicians.
The olive wreaths, known as kotinos, have symbolized victory and glory since the time of the ancient Olympic Games.
Special gifts for the absolute champions of the ninth final have been sent by the Mayor of İzmir, Dr. Cemil Tugay.
The gifts are miniature replicas of İzmir's famous Historical Clock Tower, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.
Each souvenir bears the following inscription:
“With my best wishes,
Dr. Cemil Tugay
Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality”
The Symbol of İzmir – The Historical Clock Tower
The Historical Clock Tower (Tarihi Saat Kulesi) was built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II's accession to the throne.
Located in Konak Square, in the heart of İzmir, the tower stands 25 meters tall. It was constructed in the Ottoman architectural style and features four fountains surrounding its base.
The clock itself was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II.
With its elegant architecture and historical significance, the Clock Tower has become an emblem of both İzmir and its Metropolitan Municipality.
The winners of the mathematics tournament will therefore take home not only their well-deserved awards but also a special keepsake from the city that welcomed them.
The ninth edition of “In the Footsteps of Thales” has once again brought together young mathematical talents from different parts of the world, demonstrating that mathematics is a universal language connecting people, cultures, and nations.
